![]() Q: What should I do if my Top Fill Hummingbird Feeder is leaking?Ī: When filling your feeder, there are a few steps you should take to prevent leakage: Not only will this offer some shade, but it will also attract more hummingbirds. Try placing your hummingbird feeder near trees or flowering plants. A location with a little shade a few times a day is best. Too much sun may cause nectar to spoil more quickly. Some of those original feeders are still sold by Woodstream today. Yule-Hyde was founded over 40 years by a brother and sister duo who manufactured many of their own feeders from their garage before becoming the largest distributor and manufacturer of wild bird feeders in Canada. and merged with the newly-acquired Perky-Pet® product portfolio. In 2006, a Canadian, family-owned company called Yule-Hyde Associates Co. Our current line of bird feeders consists of several brands, including Perky-Pet® and K-Feeders. The quick success of this first feeder inspired many more innovations in bird feeding, including seed feeders for wild birds and other styles of hummingbird feeders. After some experimentation with this design, the first commercial hummingbird feeder was introduced to the world. The initial design was inspired by medical IV bottles, which were easy to adapt. In 1958, Perky-Pet® began searching for a way to feed the hummingbirds that people loved to watch outside their homes. Perky-Pet® traces its beginnings as a distributor of various pet supplies in Denver, Colorado. The bottle is also difficult to clean, due to its shape, but it's much less prone to growing mold than the base.Perky-Pet® strives to be the most trusted brand in wild bird feeding by providing bird lovers with the comprehensive resources and high quality, cost-effective bird feeding accessories they need. Once mold starts to grow inside, a bleach soak (see the Feeders section) is the only sure way to remove it. The main problem with the 210-P is its complexly-shaped base, which does not disassemble for cleaning this makes inspection and maintenance difficult. However, the HummZinger is much easier to clean and is inherently wasp- and ant-free, and its increasing popularity means that many/most hummingbirds now recognize it. I don't know whether this feeder is inherently attractive to hummingbirds, or if they have learned to recognize it from experience, but the 210-P seems to be very effective in luring visitors. I replaced the yellow flower pieces with red ones, available from Perky-Pet, and they do seem to be less attractive to bees and wasps. Replacement parts are inexpensive, but I've never seen more than two birds at this feeder, so I never bothered to replace them. The perches are rather fragile: I managed to break two off in the course of normal handling. The Perky-Pet 210-P is a very popular and inexpensive (street price ~$8) feeder, comprising a 16-ounce clear glass reservoir with a screw-on cap for hanging and a red plastic dripless base with four small, flat, yellow plastic "flowers" defining the feeding ports. It was replaced in 1997 with a HummZinger. ![]() I (Lanny Chambers) formerly used one of these feeders.
